Greetings of Dr. Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany

2015.05.17. Dr. Josef Schuster.jpg

Dear Students and Teachers,

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I very much appreciate the fact that the Regiomontanus-Gymnasium Haßfurt has taken on the task of coordinating an international project on “Jewish History”, which aims at improving students’ language skills, social competence, self-confidence and especially at promoting an open cooperation in Europe. With this project you enable students to find an individual approach to Jewish biographies and personal histories and thus to focus on the Jews in Europe as the bearers of a strong culture of their own and as important contributors to and co-creators of modern Europe. Moreover, a comparative look can help to understand the similarities as well as differences in Jewish history in different regions […].

Thank you very much for your dedication and I hope that together with your students you will be able to share the results of your project with as many people as possible and that these young people will be further encouraged to commit themselves to tolerance and democracy in the world.

Greetings of Dorothee Bär, Member of the German parliament

Dear Students and Teachers,

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

In addition to improving historical knowledge this project helps to develop young people’s language skills and social competences. International exchanges are an extremely important, indispensable part of modern society and I am very glad that these abilities and skills are already taught at school and that pupils learn and think about Europe at an early age.

I wish you exciting results of the project and a lot of energy and success as well as God’s blessing.

Greetings of Wilhelm Schneider District Administrator Haßberge

Dear Principal Bauer,

Dear Project Leaders and Students,

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

It has now been 18 exciting months since the students started participating in the international Erasmus Plus- Project “Jewish Traces in Europe” in which they have had the opportunity to gain invaluable experiences, go on unique trips, and meet interesting people from all around Europe. I am certain that you will be able to draw on these experiences your whole life. Something like that stays with you, it becomes a fond memory.

This Erasmus project has enabled the Regiomontanus Gymnasium Haßfurt to open its doors to the world and its past both literally and metaphorically. I am convinced that a school provides its students with the possibility to look beyond their own surroundings by offering all kinds of projects, school trips, and exchange programs with other schools in order to make them become more open and tolerant towards Europe and the world in general. A project like this presents the opportunity to build bridges between cultures, so that, for example, young people from Germany, Poland, Romania, Portugal and Greece have been able to learn from and about each other. This way friendships are forged in ways politicians and governments will never be able to accomplish. Talking to each other is the prerequisite/first step to understanding each other. To achieve this goal nothings is more effective than going on trips and working together. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the coordinator of this project, Harald Riegel, to the project leaders Oberstudienrätin Katrin Hiernickel, Studiendirektor Jörg Thelenberg and Studienrätin Alexandra Weber. They have put tremendous effort into starting and accompanying this project to its final stages.

Dear Students,

I would also like to thank you because you were ready to go on this adventure and to work on an important chapter in our history. During the project you encountered traces and witness reports of Jewish life but also of the horrors during the Third Reich and the atrocities and crimes committed by the Nazi Regime. I know that for many people this part of our history is difficult to comprehend and deal with. We cannot turn back time; things that happened cannot be made undone, but we can learn from our past to prevent history from repeating itself. We can also learn to stop racism and persecution in its tracks. This project has made a large contribution towards this goal.

For the future I hope that the Regiomontanus Gymnasium will continue on its path and encourage future generations to strive for cooperation and friendship between young Europeans.

Greetings of OStD Max Bauer, Principal, Regiomontanus-Gymnasium Haßfurt

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Dear Students and Teachers,

I am glad that our school has been able to start and coordinate this project over the last two years. Over the last 18 months students and teachers from Greece, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Germany have been working and spending time together in five countries as well as exchanging ideas and cooperating via the etwinning platform and various social media. During these exciting months end especially during the mobilities and meetings they have all gained knowledge of Jewish history in its many different developments and aspects in various parts of Europe. They improved their practical language skills and social competence and learned a lot about everyday life and the mentality in the countries they visited and families they stayed with. They have lived the idea of European cooperation and unity and found new friends from different countries.

I`m sure they will not forget this experience throughout their whole lives.

So I would like to thank all those who have made this possible:

Katrin Hiernickel, Alexandra Weber, Harald Riegel und Jörg Thelenberg.

The many students and teachers from the participating schools in Germany, Greece, Poland, Portugal and Romania.

All the project partners outside the school who have helped to make this project possible. The Erasmus Agency in Munich for their support and help with the generous financial support of this project.

We hope that through our involvement in this project we have contributed to building bridges between different European nations and their respective cultures and have made the past come alive in the present. This project is an integral part of the school‘s endeavours to foster international relations.
