The name Smaug is "the past tense of the primitive Germanic verb smeugan" = "to squeeze through a hole"

Who is Smaug?

• red-golden dragon

What does he do?

• he stole the treasure from the dwarves and guards it

Where does he live?

• in halls under the Lonely Mountain(Erebor)

Special Skills

• can smell very well , espacially dwarves

Smaug's Personality

 - conceited
 - thinks he's invulnerability
 - greedy  
 - laziness 
 - vain
 - intelligent
 - aggresive

Hero or Anti-Hero ?

Hero

Thorin:

• travels to the end of the earth
• returns home after the victory over the dragon
• has a purpose for his journey (wants to recapture the mountain

Bilbo

• Magical talisman (arcenstone,ring)
• "At last he came to the bend where he had to cross the water"(p.311)
• "As soon as Bombur had gone, Bilbo put on his ring,fastened his rope, slipped down over the wall, and was gone." (p.311)
• has a purpose for his journey (wants to help the dwarves)

Anti-Hero

Bilbo:

• Thief in the dark (qualitie usually belonging to villains)
• littleness (typical heroes are tall)

Thorin:

• selfish
• feels helpless in the mountain
