Effects of globalization on culture

What is globalization?

- Improvement of travel , communication and trade across the whole globe .

- international spread of goods, cultures and services

  • New word for this process -> globalization

Positive effects on culture

  • More understanding and tolerance amongst different cultures
  • choice of cultural products/innovation everywhere (food, fashion, literature, music ….)
  • easy to form bonds and friendships across the whole world(might become very useful in the future business and private life)==> All cultures in the world form one big “world culture”

Negative effects on culture

  • no more room for local businesses

Small local businesses have no chance to compete with big international brands and companies ( Adidas , Lacoste , Gucci // Mc Donalds ,KFC, Burger King …).

  • loss of identity

People lose the connection to their own culture , roots and originfinally, one unified, boring world culture that is the same, commercial, mass-culture everywhere ==> boring, no choice, loss of cultural diversity

  • winners and losers

Some people and countries profit from globalization , others suffer

  • e.g. people that have to work up to 16 hours a day for a really little wage in sweatshops or factories
  • local artists whose music, books, products no-one buys any more, as commercial, cheap “world culture” is more fashionable ….
