summary

Introduction Today up to 2500 children and teenagers starrt living on the street every day in Germany. What are the reasons and what help is offered to them e.g. in Stuttgart, at the youth project "Schlupfwinkel"?

Reasons for landing on the streets:

  • difficult, sometimes poor families with unemployment, drug problems
  • at home nobody cared about them
  • problems with parents because of friends, school …
  • terrible experiences like a death in the family, abuse/domestic violence
  • parents have thrown them out
  • parents can't cope teenagers with drug addiction and stealing/prostitution



Help offered to the children and teenagers in youth centres/open houses:

  • safe place where you can rest
  • place where you can take a shower, wash your clothes, eat
  • someone listens to them
  • help and advice with medical problems, drug problems, school, finding a job, findig a place to live
  • help /avice on talking to parents again
  • help with looking for a job/writing letters of application/job interviews
  • prove to them that they aren't losers, that they have strengths and skills and that work can be fun
