TEXT Dire poverty in US to worsen under Trump, threatening democracy, top UN official says

Explain the reasons why there is so much poverty and inequality in the United States and why it will only get worse.

  • Poverty and inequality omnipresent even for those who work: Not every American has access to clean water and sanitation → get sick (hookworm)
  • Social mobility doesn’t really work in USA
EXAMPLE: Walmart employees must apply for food stamps because don’t earn enough → Poor kids don’t have access to proper
nutrition and education →can’t get a good job (vicious circle)
  • FUTURE: Trump administrations plans on tax reforms which benefit the rich, cut healthcare and welfare programs which could help the poor→ situation will get worse

CARTOON Analysis

Things written in brackets should only help you to recognize the different parts/stages of the analysis of a cartoon. you MUSTN'T write them down in the test on Friday!

The cartoon from the website “Wordpress.com” is divided into two parts which show a contrast in regard to the social gap in American society. (Source + topic) In the picture on the left hand side you can see a mother, father and their son who are all impeccably dressed. The grown man is smoking a cigar while giving his young son a huge goblet filled with jewellery on which is written “riches”. The family in the other part of the cartoon is dressed casually and the mother is holding a crying baby while the father is giving the son an old box on which is written “poverty”. Both fathers say “This is yours, son. It’s been in the family for generations.” (Description) The two families represent American society which is composed of people from different social classes. In the last couple of decades poverty amongst Americans has increased to about 20% of the population whereas the rich, who make up about 1%, get richer due to tax reforms and the fact that the American Dream is just an illusion. This US core value says that everybody can achieve everything if they only work hard (background knowledge) enough but the cartoonist points out that this social mobility doesn’t really exist in the United States. Poor people can hardly afford to send their kids to good schools, which charge high tuition, so they don’t have the education to get a good job, so they remain in the lower classes of society and often rely on welfare. This develops into a vicious circle which poor people cannot escape which is represented by the cartoon: Rich people stay rich and poor people remain poor because they don’t have the means to move upward. (Explanation) The cartoonist wants to draw people’s attention to this injustice, so they do something about it by, for instance, supporting poor people in their community.
