Questions on the text

Read the text in GREEN LINE Oberstufe p. 46/47 and answer the following questions

  • Describe the concept of affirmative action and explain why it was necessary to establish this concept.

The United States is a country with a huge ethnic diversity but not all ethnic groups are treated equally, especially when it comes to the access to jobs and good schools and universities. Therefore the government implemented the policy of affirmative action, so that people from so far discriminated minority groups, like for example African Americans, would have a chance at the American Dream, too. This was accomplished by forcing schools and companies to accept a certain ratio of people from minority groups.

  • Explain how the problem of racial inequality can be solved according to the text.

The problem of racial inequality can be solved by giving everybody the chance to get a better education. The schools and their systems, as well as their buildings must be improved and teachers must be attracted to work in areas that are less desirable, so that everybody has equal opportunities. In order to do that Americans must change their attitude towards racial diversity, too. They should embrace this concept as America is based on this multicultural society.

CARTOON analysis

Here is another cartoon to practise: Illegal immigration to America

Analyze the cartoon and then compare with these results

1) Source: Andy Singer

2) Description: at the shore; couple with a child are arriving (use Present PROGRESSIVE to describe) on a boat (in the background we can see the ship the couple came with to America); three Native Americans are welcoming them with the words.... Caption reads....

3) Background knowledge/meaning (SIMPLE PRESENT): Ship = Mayflower on which English Puritans and other English settlers (=Pilgrim Fathers) arrived in Plymouth in 1620. The Puritans had left England because of religious peresecution. The Native represent the aboriginal population at that time.

4) Criticism: Pilgrim Fathers, whose descendents nowadays want to stop immigration to the United States, were illegal immigrants themselves. And just like today's illegal immigrants from countries like Mexico, they did not assimilate to the aboriginal culture but basically extinguished the Native American population. The cartoonist wants to remind people of this fact, so that they might be more tolerant to immigrants since their ancestors were in the same situation as they are now.

Cartoon for analysis

In the cartoon the statue says: "Bring me your..." This refers to a poem in which the statue's seen as a symbol of freedom for immigrants.
