''' LITERARY TERMS '''

'''THEME''' (= fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work)

e.g. (1) Love's Difficulty Love (emotional) vs. Reasons (Athenian law, laws of nature)

*LOVE: Hermia loves Lysander (true love), Theseus desires Hippolyta, Helena is in love with Demetrius, Thisbe loves Pyramus, Oberon is married to Titania

*REASON: the emotion of lovem jealousy causes problems (Hermia opposes Athenian law and runs away with Lysander, Thisbe and Pyramus die, nature is out of balance [storms etc.] because Titania and Oberon have a fight caused by jealousy

(2) Dream

*Hermia's dream: wakes up to find Lysander in love with Helena

*Athenians wake up outside the fairy forest: it has all been just a dream

*Bottom's dream: wakes up after a night with Titania (nightmare for her)

*Audience's dream: the play has just been a dream/an illusion => makes it possible to include supernatural characters (e.g. fairies)

'''Taming of the Shrew'''

*Language Analysis of first Meeting between Petruchio and Katharina

''Shakespeare uses different stylistic devices in this scene to create humour. When Petruchio keeps referring to Katharina as “Kate” (l. 4-9) although he knows that she abhors this shortened form of her name, he creates an atmosphere in which he establishes Petruchio as the man in the house who does whatever he pleases and Katharina can only stand by and be annoyed.

In line 34-35 Shakespeare achieves the same effect by enumerating certain characteristics Katharina has according to Petruchio. This exaggeration or flat out lie shows again that Petruchio has the upper hand which he uses to “tame the shrew”.

The pun in line 8 “for Dainties are all Kates” which refers to a sweet in Elizabethan times also pokes fun at Katharina as she is anything but sweet to her fellow human beings.

The use of language in this passage underlines the stereotypical roles of the superior man and the inferior woman in the 16th century, and starts the funny process of taming Katharina.

''

*Answering questions

''Describe Hortensio’s plan and explain why it is necessary.''

PLAN

-Disguise as a music teacher Litio, so he can see Bianca every day and court her

-Accompanies Petruchio who is supposed to court Katharina

-Petruchio marries Katharina

REASON

-Bianca’s father has demanded that she’d stay in the house

-Katharina must be married before Bianca can leave the house again and be courted again

''Hortensio wants to court Bianca but her father Baptista has forbidden this until Bianca’s sister Katharina, a bad-tempered and envious shrew, is married. In order to prevent Bianca from meeting any suitors, her father has forced her to stay at home which is why Hortensio comes up with the plan to disguise himself as a music teacher who would be allowed to see Bianca for her music lessons every day and court her. His plan to get Katharina a husband, so he can eventually marry Bianca, includes his friend Petruchio who is currently looking for a rich wife. They both agree to go through with the plan.

Possible Introduction to MEDIATION

Everybody has at least heard of or even watched one of Shakespeare’s plays like “Romeo and Juliet”, “Hamlet” or “Macbeth” being performed on stages worldwide. The Great Bard, as he is known, is deemed a literary genius because of these plays that are considered some of the greatest works of literature for their wit, universal themes and knowledge of human nature.

Although experts agree on the greatness of these plays, they do not agree on the author of them. As not much is known about William Shakespeare, some people believe that there is room for a different author. Amongst the possible candidates are…
