Oi! Just you mind your language!

question 1

The English language that is spoken in Britain is changing over time because there are many factors that influence the British English. The influences that change this language mentioned in the text are popstars or comics that are shown on TV and radio. Especially young children use the US slang spoken on TV or sung on radio to achieve some street coolness. Because not all Britains understand this slang new dictionaries like New Oxford, Chambers and Collins including neologism were published. Not all people take these changes serious but just laugh about it. As a conclusion I would say that British English is changing and that the R.P. will once completely disappear and be replaced e.g. by Estuary English.

The advert Men's underwear...
question answer
what product? It is an advert from jbs - mens underwear
aim and target group? Obviously, the target group are men beacause the ad is about male underwear
elements (description, relation between them? On the picture you can see a young, sexy and attractive woman sitting on a toilet in a bathroom. She is half-naked beacause the only thing she is wearing is the male boxershort which is hanging on her lower leg. Her boobs are hidden by her beautiful long brown hair and in her hands she is holding a magazine about Motor Sports. Her facial expression shows her sexiness beacause her mouth is open a bit and her eyes are staring directly at the person who looks at this advert.

At the bottom on the left side you can read the sentence "Men don't wnat to look at naked men" and on the right side the "jbs - mens underwear" emblem is printed.

how is "customers'" attention attracted? Jbs attracts the customers' attention with the hot woman on the picture and they connect her with the motto: "Men don't want to look at naked men". I think they are right beacause every normal man is rather attracted by a half-naked woman than by a half-naked man who presents this product.
message (of text and image)? The message of the text is that men shall buy jbs underwear beacause it is so sexy, that also your girlfriend/woman/wife likes it so much that she will wear it too. Furthermore they want to show that their advert is done very well and that they really thought about their target group and their preference by showing a half-naked woman instead of a half-naked man.
how does the advert work, how are people influenced/convinced?
  • advert appeals to ...
  • message is supported by ...
  • advert uses customers' wishes, fears, etc. to ...
  • rhetorical and stylistic devices in language and imagery:
  • reader makes associations with/is reminded of ...?

Homework: Advertising. 15.03.2010

1. What product is advertised/for sale? The product that is advertised for is BMW.

2. Describe the elements (picture(s), title, slogans, texts, emblems ...) of the advert. The poster/picture shows the shoulders and the head of a really beautiful and sexy woman lying naked on the floor. She has long curled blond hair and a very cute and pretty face. On the left side of the picture you can read the slogan "You know you're not the first" what is written in very small letters. The BMW emblem is printed at the bottom in the right corner in a white square where you can also read "Sheer Driving Pleasure" and "BMW Premium Selection".

3. What group(s) of people is this advert directed at? I think that this advert is especially directed at the masculine population because everybody knows the typical man stereotype: Men like women and cars. This advert links those two preferences of men and

4. What is the message/question/promise of the advert? How is this (implicitly/explicitly) expressed?

5. How is the taerget group made to want this product? Through which channels/by what rhetorical or visual tricks/effects does the advert appeal to the viewer/reader?

INTRODUCTION

Anatole France once said: "To accomplish great things, we must dream as well as act." And in my opinion he is right because I think that dreaming is very important. If you dream of something, you set yourself a target in your life because normally you want to fulfill this dream. But you can't only dream and hope that it will come true on its own. You always have to follow this dream and you have to work hard to fulfill it.

Homework for Thursday, 15th of October 2009

The already high bar set for President Obama got even higher Friday, when the Nobel Prize Committee shocked the world, and the president himself, by announcing he was to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Just nine months into his presidency, Obama has set an ambitious diplomatic agenda, calling for peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and a decrease in the world's nuclear weapons. Real results are yet to come, but the expectations just got higher. Just nine months into his presidency, Obama has set an ambitious diplomatic agenda, calling for peace between Israel and the Palestinians and a decrease in the world's nuclear weapons, but has yet to achieve any real results. Already faced with the challenge of working to ensure his actions keep pace with his rhetoric, the president now has an even higher standard by which his accomplishments will be gauged. As his former opponent, Sen. John McCain, R- Ariz., put it: "He now has even more to live up to." The committee said it awarded the prize to Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," but made the clear the prize was intended to encourage Obama to greatness rather than celebrate any achievement.
