The already high bar set for President Obama got even higher Friday, when the Nobel Prize Committee shocked the world, and the president himself, by announcing he was to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Just nine months into his presidency, Obama has set an ambitious diplomatic agenda, calling for peace between Israel and the Palestinians, and a decrease in the world's nuclear weapons. Real results are yet to come, but the expectations just got higher. Already faced with the challenge of working to ensure his actions keep pace with his rhetoric, the president now has an even higher standard by which his accomplishments will be gauged. As his former opponent, Sen. John McCain, R- Ariz., put it: "He now has even more to live up to." The committee said it awarded the prize to Obama for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," but made the clear the prize was intended to encourage Obama to greatness rather than celebrate any achievement.

Die sowieso schon hoch angelegte Messlatte für Präsident Obama wurde am Freitag noch höher angelegt, als das Nobel-Preis-Komittee die Welt und den Präsidenten selbst schockierte, indem es bekannt gab, dass er den Friedens-Nobel-Preis erhielt. Nach nur 9 Monaten Präsidentschaft, hat Obama eine ehrgeizige diplomatische Agenda eingerichtet, die zum Frieden zwischen Israel und den Palästinensern und einem Rückgang der Nuclear-Waffen aufruft, wobei er schon einige wirkliche Ergebnisse erzielt hat. Da er schon mit der Herausforderung konfrontiert wurde, zu gewährleisten, dass seine Taten mit seinen Worten Schritt halten, hat der Präsident nun einen noch höheren Standard, an dem seine Errungenschaften beurteilt werden werden. Wie schon sein früherer Gegner, Sen. John McCain, es sagte: „Nun hat er noch mehr zu erfüllen.“ Das Kommittee sagte, es verleihe Obama den Preis für seine "außerordentlichen Bemühungen zu starker internationaler Diplomatie und Zusammenarbeit zwischen Völkern", aber versicherte ,dass die Auszeichnung Obama eher Bedeutsamkeit zuzusprechen beabsichtigte als irgendwelche Erfolge zu feiern.
