Cartoon Analysis

Cartoon

The cartoon from the website www.larrycuban.wordpress.com is divided into two parts. In both parts you can see a man sitting at a desk in front of a computer. In the picture on the left-hand side, which is titled 1980, the man is rather skinny but the computer is quite big. In the oppposite picture which shows the situation in the year 2013 the same man is sitting in front of a small laptop computer but he himself has gained much weight. In the last couple of years technology has improved immensely and as a result computers have become smaller, so you can use them as portable mobile devices. Unfortunately, these technological advances have also brought some negative side effects: As people spend more and more time on their technological devices to gather information, use online services and other useful applications, or communicate with people worldwide, there is no need to change one's physical location. As a consequence people lose their social skills because they do not interact with their fellow human beings face to face and gain weight as they don't get any exercise anymore. So the technological progress has caused social problems and health risks. The cartoonist wants to criticize this development and warn people of the execessive use of modern technology which can have serious negative effects on their lives.

DEFINITE ARTICLE

Agatha Christie, the most famous detective story writer of all times, was born in Torquay/Devon in 1890. She never went to school because her parents had her home schooled. When she was a young woman she went to Paris where she studied Music in order to become a singer. In 1914 she married when World War II broke out, she worked as a hospital dispenser in Torquay. Her exact knowledge about poisons, which she used later on in her novels, came from that time in that hospital. During that time she began reading detective novels. These stories made such a huge impression on her that she decided to write novels herself. The Mysterious Affair of Styles, the first of 60 detective novels was published in 1920. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, a novel which revolves around murder and suicide was published in 1926 and is considered a masterpiece of detective fiction. Agatha Christie, the Queen of Crime, died in 1976. Her books continue to be popular all around the world as they have been translated into more than 100 languages so far. That’s why it comes as no surprise that to most people “Hercule Poirot” and “Miss Marple” are equal to “Sherlock Holmes.”

Kevin Brooks ''iBoy''

Explain why Tom Harvey is so distraught in this text passage.

Tom Harvey is emotionally distraught because he realizes that his alter ego iBoy has taken away his chance to be a normal 16-year-old boy. (=Thesis) After having severely injured and even killed some of the gang members who had abducted Lucy and him, Tom must acknowledge the fact that he doesn’t really feel remorse or guilt for using his iPowers to fight the Crows. This realization depresses him because it shows that iBoy, his vigilante persona who possesses these iPowers, has turned Tom Harvey into a cold and unfeeling person. A state from which he won’t be able to recover as he finally accepts “He [iBoy] was with me forever.” (p. 243, l. 33)
