CARTOON analysis
Here is another cartoon to practise: Illegal immigration to America
Analyze the cartoon and then compare with these results
1) Source: Andy Singer
2) Description: at the shore; couple with a child are arriving (use Present PROGRESSIVE to describe) on a boat (in the background we can see the ship the couple came with to America); three Native Americans are welcoming them with the words.... Caption reads....
3) Background knowledge/meaning (SIMPLE PRESENT): Ship = Mayflower on which English Puritans and other English settlers (=Pilgrim Fathers) arrived in Plymouth in 1620. The Puritans had left England because of religious peresecution. The Native represent the aboriginal population at that time.
4) Criticism: Pilgrim Fathers, whose descendents nowadays want to stop immigration to the United States, were illegal immigrants themselves. And just like today's illegal immigrants from countries like Mexico, they did not assimilate to the aboriginal culture but basically extinguished the Native American population. The cartoonist wants to remind people of this fact, so that they might be more tolerant to immigrants since their ancestors were in the same situation as they are now.
In the cartoon the statue says: "Bring me your..." This refers to a poem in which the statue's seen as a symbol of freedom for immigrants.
