how does the advert work, how are people influenced/conviced?
  • advert appeals to women who want to do the same like her or men who want to meet gils like her at the reggeafest
  • message is supported by the contrast of the conservative blond girl and the dread locks
  • advert uses customers' wishes, fears, etc. to break out of everyday life to do something exciting just for one day, not always be good
  • rhetorical and stylistic devices in language and imagery: contrast
  • reader makes associations with/is reminded of light blue stand for desires, the desire to do something special for one day?

The advert is from a reggae fest in California. It shows a pretty, blond, young woman who is dressed very conservatively with a light blue dress. Only her head and her shoulders can be seen and the girl nearly fills the whole poster. Her hair cut is also quite unnoticeable except for one dread lock streak. She is gazing somewhere the customer can not see, but looks in his direction. Furthermore, her mouth is slightly open, what makes her look attractive. On the top of the advert the slogan and the sign of the event are placed, the slogan says: "There´s only one day to reggae August 15, Shaw Millenium Park". The background is completely coloured in the same light blue as the girl´s dress. This advert is especially made for people who normally wouldn´t go to a reggaefest or are no fans of this style of music, but also informs reggae fans about the event. The attention of men and women is attracted differently. the eyecatcher for men is the beautiful young woman in this picture, whereas women recognize that something is "wrong". They are attracted by the contrast of the normal good girl and the dread locks. The message of this poster is to break out of daily life for one day. It doesn´t matter who you are and what you normally do. If you are no rastafari you nevertheless should come, because you will have fun. For one day you needn´t be the good girl, but you can be wild. this especially refers to women, whereas for men the message is that they can meet such attractive girls at the event. the jmessage is supported by the contrast between the normal girl and the dread lock streak. also the dominant colour in this poster underlines the meesage in two different way. the first one is again the contrast. Light blue is a very old fashioned colour and nobody would associatate this colour with reggae, where red, green and yellow are typical. On the other hand light blue stands for harmony and desire. One can find harmony at the reggeafest by being part of this great event and the desire stands for the wish to be free and wild for one day by breaking out of daily routine. in conclusion, image and text work well together to support the meesage.
